Amoija Events verduidelik:

Having the race over the heritage weekend in Stellenbosch we could not have chosen a more appropriate name for the event than the Tribe who once ruled the Drakenstein valley. The Cochoqua was one of the riches and strongest of the Khoi tribes in area of the Berg River and Drakenstein Valleys. Their tribal leader, Gonnama was instrumental to their success and the tribe was between 16 000 -18 000 members in the 1670’s. The Cochoqua tribe was defeated during the second Khoikhoi – Dutch war 1670, and most of their livestock was looted. On the death of their leaders, the tribe dispersed, with some trekking towards the Orange River, while others were in the service of colonists.

Lees meer daaroor in The Record: Or, a Series of Official Papers Relative to the Condition and Treatment of the Native Tribes of South Africa.

It is estimated that at a certain stage the variety of cultures living in the Cape (such as the Khoikhoi, the French, Dutch, British and Malay peoples) made the Cape one of the most cosmopolitan places on earth.

Boschendal, where the Cochoqua trail – three day stage race is hosted this year, is one of the Boland’s olders farms, and we did some reading.

Gonnema was the honoured leader of the Cochoqua people, and was the inspiration for the Amoija three-day stage race that is held at Boschendal this weekend. The name of the race (cocoqua trail), refers to the Cocoqua tribe who lived in the Drakenstein valley. Amoija Events explain:

Having the race over the heritage weekend in Stellenbosch we could not have chosen a more appropriate name for the event than the Tribe who once ruled the Drakenstein valley. The Cochoqua was one of the riches and strongest of the Khoi tribes in area of the Berg River and Drakenstein Valleys. Their tribal leader, Gonnama was instrumental to their success and the tribe was between 16 000 -18 000 members in the 1670’s. On the death of their leaders, the tribe dispersed, with some trekking towards the Orange River, while others were in the service of colonists.

There are fascinating records of the many negotiations between the Dutch authorities and the Cochoqua peoples in the journal of a certain Johan Bax. Read more about it in The Record: Or, a Series of Official Papers Relative to the Condition and Treatment of the Native Tribes of South Africa.
